The North West region covers a large geographical area from the beautiful Lake District to leafy parts of Cheshire and everywhere in between.
We have a large number of hospitals providing a mixture of traditional hospital based rheumatology services, community based working departments and tertiary referral centres.
We have an established and well-run regional peer review process and also mentoring schemes for both trainees and newly appointed consultants.
Regional subspecialty areas of interest include vasculitis, lupus, myositis, scleroderma and Bechet’s disease.
We are home to the BSRBR and the Arthritis Research UK Epidemiology Unit. We have a very active research community, participate in a regional audit programme and many units are involved in both national and international research projects.
We are privileged to have a large and highly regarded specialist training programme. This is a mixed training scheme with both pure rheumatology and dual training in general (internal) medicine. There are many research opportunities and the Masters degree in clinical rheumatology run by The University of Manchester. Many of our trainees go on to secure consultant jobs within the region.
We host a number of teaching opportunities within the region. This includes a monthly Manchester rheumatology afternoon and twice yearly North West rheumatology club meetings (shared with Mersey Deanery). In addition to these, many local units host teaching days throughout the year.
Having a regional chair is a new and exciting development for the region. We are already looking at creating a clinical network to help share best practice, discuss topical issues and bring together the educational activities within the region.
