BSR’s annual early career research funding call supports members with little or no previous engagement with research and helps them develop their research career. This opportunity is available to applicants from the whole MDT in adult, paediatric and adolescent rheumatology.

The award is for short pieces of research work (six months to a year) and is for either a standalone research project or a pilot study, which could lead to a larger grant or PhD application.

The work can be undertaken full-time or part-time.

Areas prioritised for support in 2023 will be:
  • Research recommendations resulting from published BSR guidelines
  • Using BSR registers or, audit data
  • Paediatric and adolescent rheumatology
  • Important research areas identified by BSR members: health services research, chronic pain, rare diseases, and resolving issues caused by COVID-19.

BSR suggests project proposal costs of £20k-£40k.  Our full funding call budget is currently £60k per annum.

To apply you should be:
  • A subscribed member of BSR
  • Practicing within the rheumatology MDT. Proposals involving the MDT are particularly welcome
Applications based on recommended areas of research will be given priority and all applications are assessed for their relevance to BSRs strategic aims.
Previous winners of this award are not eligible to apply.
